Landscape organization in the non-glaciated high-mountain ranges in Europe

چکیده
The landscape pattern in the high-mountains is significantly more complex than in the lowlands. Theories, models and methods which are usually applied in landscape studies (such as the geo-complex model and the patch-corridor-matrix model) are inadequate or insufficient in regard to high-mountains. The altitude is the main factor determining the multi-dimensionality of the high-mountain landscape, which affects climate, geomorphic processes and vegetation structure. Difficulties and opportunities in the application of particular landscape-ecological concepts in the high-mountains are assessed in this paper. Particular attention is given to three spatial orders in the high-mountain landscape: vertical zonality, catenal order and belt order (related to geology), as well as landscape boundaries (ecotones) and landscape dynamics. In order to evade the impact of glaciation the aforementioned issues were studied in the non-glaciated mountain ranges in Europe. These are selected ranges in the Carpathians and the Eastern Alps, the mountains of the Balkan Peninsula, Pyrenees, the mountains of Great Britain and Variscan massifs in Poland, Czech Republic, Germany and France.

Glaciated valleys in Europe and western Asia
In recent years, remote sensing, morphometric analysis, and other computational concepts and tools have invigorated the field of geomorphological mapping. Automated interpretation of digital terrain data based on impartial rules holds substantial promise for large dataset processing and objective landscape classification. However, the geomorphological realm presents tremendous complexity and ch...
متن کاملIce thickness and topographic relief in glaciated landscapes of the western USA
The development of relief in glaciated landscapes plays a crucial role in hypotheses relating climate change and tectonic processes. In particular, glaciers can only be responsible for peak uplift if they are capable of generating significant relief in formerly nonglaciated landscapes. Previous work has suggested that relief in glaciated landscapes should scale with the thickness of the ice. He...

متن کاملHypsometry of Glaciated Landscapes
Hypsometry (frequency distribution of elevations) is often used to characterize landscape morphology, traditionally in the context of the degree of fluvial dissection. Recently, the hypsometry of glaciated regions has been used to infer how rates of glacial erosion compare with tectonic uplift rates. However, many factors other than tectonics can also exert a major influence on the hypsometry o...
متن کاملMorphological analysis of glaciated valleys in the Zardkuh Mountains, Iran
The morphology of glacial valley can be described in terms of power law or quadratic equations fitted to valley cross-profiles. These two models are used to study the cross-profiles of 86 valley cross-profiles in the Zardkuh Mountain in order to understand the evolutional patterns of valleys. Assessment of using the power law function indicates that b values for both valley sides range from 1.0...
